Get ready, film buffs! Guillermo del Toro, the visionary director behind cinematic masterpieces like The Shape of Water and Pan's Labyrinth, is about to receive the British Film Institute's (BFI) highest honor: a BFI Fellowship. This places him in the company of legendary filmmakers like David Lean, Akira Kurosawa, and Martin Scorsese – quite a prestigious group!
The BFI is recognizing del Toro's incredible contributions to the world of cinema, highlighting his unique artistry across animation and live-action films, and acknowledging his significant impact as a Mexican filmmaker, working in both Spanish and English.
But here's where it gets exciting: Del Toro will be presented with his Fellowship at the annual BFI Chair's dinner in London next May. But that's not all! The celebration includes a public career conversation at BFI Southbank, a retrospective of his work, and even a curated film season at BFI Southbank. Aspiring filmmakers will also benefit from masterclasses led by del Toro himself, and a special visit to the BFI National Archive is planned.
Del Toro himself expressed his gratitude, calling it "the honor of a lifetime." He also emphasized his long-standing connection to British cinema, citing the influence of British films and filmmakers on his work.
And this is the part most people miss... Del Toro's ties to the BFI go way back. As a young projectionist in Mexico, he sourced prints from the BFI National Archives. He even secured Mexico's first screening of Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom. This connection continues to this day, with del Toro discussing the British films that have inspired him, from Alfred Hitchcock's silent films to animated classics like Watership Down.
BFI Chair Jay Hunt praised del Toro as an "extraordinary filmmaker" with a strong relationship with the BFI, highlighting his championing of British talent. She emphasized the boldness and imagination that defines his work, stating that the Fellowship recognizes his remarkable impact on cinema and his ability to inspire audiences worldwide.
As part of the honor, the BFI will re-release del Toro's debut feature, Cronos (1992), which has been remastered in 4K. The film, which served as his international calling card, will be shown in cinemas across the U.K.
Del Toro's career is marked by its diversity, spanning big-budget comic book adaptations, special-effects blockbusters, Oscar-winning dramas, and stop-motion animation. His recent project, a re-interpretation of Frankenstein, is already generating awards buzz.
It's worth noting: Other BFI Fellows include screen legends such as Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, and more recently, Tilda Swinton, Christopher Nolan, and Tom Cruise.
